Radiator Installation and Repair in Purley

Common radiator problems and what causes them
Most radiator complaints come down to one of six things, and a couple of them you can sort out yourself in ten minutes.
- Cold at the top, warm at the bottom. Trapped air. Bleed it with a radiator key and top the system pressure back up. No callout needed.
- Cold at the bottom, warm at the top. Sludge sitting in the bottom of the radiator. That is a flush job, not a bleed job.
- One radiator cold while the rest are hot. Usually a seized thermostatic valve pin. Often freed off in five minutes.
- The radiators furthest from the boiler never get hot. The system needs balancing so the near radiators stop taking all the flow.
- A slow drip from the valve. The valve gland or the olive. Not urgent, but it will stain the floor and corrode the valve if it is left.
- The radiator is hot but the room is still cold. The radiator is undersized for the room, and swapping it for a taller or double panel unit is the fix.

- A straight swap in the same position is the cheapest job, and it is labour plus the radiator itself.
- Moving a radiator to a different wall means altering pipework, so it costs more than a swap.
- Adding a radiator to a room with no heating is priced after we have seen where the existing pipes run.
- A valve replacement on its own is the smallest job on this page and priced accordingly.

Common questions
Why is my radiator cold at the bottom?
Sludge collecting in the bottom of the radiator, almost always. Cold at the top instead usually means trapped air, which you can bleed yourself. Cold all over usually means a stuck valve or a balancing problem.
How much does it cost to replace a radiator?
A like-for-like swap in the same position is a fixed labour price plus the cost of the radiator, and we will tell you the figure over the phone. Moving it to a different wall means altering pipework, so that one is priced after we have looked. A photo of the radiator and the wall it is on is usually enough for us to quote from.
Can you add a radiator to a room that does not have one?
Usually yes. It depends on where the existing pipework runs and whether the boiler has the capacity for another radiator. We check both before quoting rather than fitting it and hoping.
Do you fit vertical and designer radiators?
Yes. Just be aware that a designer radiator often puts out less heat than the standard one it replaces, so we check the output against what the room needs before you buy it.
Can you take radiators off for decorating?
Yes, we remove and refit them. It is a small job and worth booking both visits at the same time.
My radiator valve is leaking, is that urgent?
Turn the valve off if you can and put something under it. A slow weep is not an emergency but it will stain the floor and corrode the valve further, so get it booked in rather than leaving it.
